the exhibition

“숨 — To Draw Breath” at Gallery Shilla intertwines the conceptual depth of breath with the aesthetic experiences of mindfulness and meditation. This exhibition features Giopato&Coombes’ light sculptures alongside the contemplative works of Korea’s Dansaekhwa masters, creating a dialogue between light and monochrome painting.

The exhibition’s title, “숨” (Sum), translates to “breath” in Korean, encapsulating
both the physiological act and its deeper spiritual significance. The Dansaekhwa movement, known for its Korean monochrome painting, embodies a contemplative approach where repetitive techniques mirror mindful breathing. Artists such as Park Seo-Bo, Suh Seung-Won, Quac Insik, and Kim Yeon Kyu engage in meticulous processes that invite viewers into a reflective space of calm and introspection.
